Thank you for your interest in a one-to-one Bible reading group! If you are facilitating discussion, you don’t need to do any prep or homework except to read through (or listen to!) the whole book on your own each week before meeting to understand the larger context.
Here’s what a meeting looks like:
- Open in prayer
- Read one chapter (or less depending on time)
- Discuss the chapter by asking 4 questions:
- What in the text stands out to me and why?
- What questions do I have about the text?
- What does this tell me about God?
- How do I need to live or think differently as a result of this text?
- Close in prayer
These questions come from a Bible study method called the Swedish method. Here’s a video from a different church that explains it a little more. David Helm’s book One-to-One Bible Reading also explains this method in greater detail.
Here are a few more notes:
- Please try the one-to-one reading method at least once with your group. After you’ve tried it, feel free to choose another method of Bible study from the approved list below or continue with the one-to-one method.
- After two studies with the same group, please consider forming new groups with different women so that more women have the opportunity to read the Word one-to-one. The women’s core’s goal is to give each woman in the church an opportunity to fellowship over the Word with other women from Zoe.
- It’s ok to have unanswered questions during your discussions! We encourage you to use some of these resources if you get stumped. You can also reach out to one of the elders or members of the women’s core for additional resource suggestions.
- Suggested resources:
- ESV Study BIble
- MacArthur Study Bible
- The Word and the World: An Introduction to the Old Testament by Eugene H. Merrill
- If you run into any issues, please ask any member of the women’s core or any of the elders for help.
We pray that the Lord will give you fruitful discussion, rich times of fellowship over the Word, and a greater love for the Lord and each other as you feast on His Word!
